tutorial: carrie bradshaw's oversized white flower

i've decided to turn our extra bathroom into a makeup/beauty room. with an ultra-girly sex and the city theme {pause for reaction. needless to say, i'm ecstatic!}. my beautiful friend kristina suggested i use the oversized white flower on carrie's stunning dress from sex and the city: the movie as a decorative element. so—in my first ever tutoriali've attempted to recreate carrie's memorable flora. enjoy!

materials.
{i bought the faux flowers for 50% off at a local hobby lobby. please note that the other items i had on hand}
two large white daylilies ($2 for both)
large white rose ($1)
two small gold flowers ($2 for both)
hot glue gun and glue sticks (not shown)
gold fabric (not shown)
white and gold braided cord (optional; not shown)

...and a curious kitty =)
step one. separate the daylily petals from everything else. discard the stems and leaves (unless you have another craft use for them!)
step two. place one of the daylilies inside the other, arranging the combined flowers to look as full as possible. secure with a few dabs of hot glue, but take care not to fill the holes at the bottom. you'll need these later when bringing the entire flower together.
step three. pull apart the rose petals as done with the daylily in step one. take the first few outer layers off, leaving the very inner part of the rose intact (with a stem-like wire). repeat this with the gold flowers, separating the leaves and petals of each.
step four. re-assemble the rose by poking the stem/wire through alternating gold and white petals. you won't need to put all of the petals back into placetwo layers of gold petals should be sufficient. after adjusting the petals, secure the bottom layers with hot glue.

step five (not shown). cut five petal-shaped pieces of gold fabric and assemble them in a star pattern {i suppose you could also cut out a star-shaped piece and make a hole in the center for the wire}. secure each piece inside the daylilies with hot glue—and be careful—the fabric i used was so thin that the glue seeped right through!
step six. push the stem/wire of the rose through the center hole of the daylilies. it should fit snugly. secure with glue (on backsides of petals and around the wire).

step seven. glue gold leaves behind the rose petals. if you'd like to hang your oversized flower, secure a gold and white cord to the back of the flower with hot glue, and be sure to let it dry completely before hanging!

{standard-size sharpie included for size reference}
here's the finished product (already hanging on the shower curtain)! what do you think? are you inspired to make one of your own?

and do you have any ideas for my sex and the city themed bathroom? i will appreciate any and all suggestions =)

  1. Wow! This is such a cute idea, great for some decoration around the house, or maybe for a hat or bag, or something, just in a smaller size :) Saw this on craft gawker!Thanks for sharing!
